Academic Conference Explores Key Developments in Albanian Lexicography of the 1930s and 1940s

As part of the Year of the Albanian Language, the scientific conference “Albanian Explanatory Lexicography of the 1930s-1940s” was held at the university library of Shkodra University “Luigj Gurakuqi.”

The event was organized by the Institute of Linguistics and Literature at the Academy of Sciences of Albania, the Department of Linguistics at the university, and its Albanological Studies Center. This joint activity follows a series of other scientific collaborations between these institutions.

Academician Valter Memisha shared the positive news about the ongoing work on the compilation of a comprehensive Albanian dictionary. The conference was also greeted by Prof. Dr. Blerta Dragusha, Vice-Rector of Shkodra University. In the welcoming addresses, several challenges and achievements of Albanian explanatory lexicography during the 1930s and 1940s were highlighted, as well as the key role scholars from the Northern region played in these developments, positioning them as leaders in the field.

The papers presented at this scientific gathering analyzed the work of that period and assessed its legacy in the contemporary context, focusing on the lexicographical contributions of N. Gazulli, P. Tase, L. Nosi, and A. Sirdani; the lexical publications by other scholars such as M. Kruja, K. Gurakuqi, and A. Xhuvani; as well as the theoretical issues raised by researchers of the time, such as F. Konica and L. Gurakuqi, thus laying the groundwork for institutional monolingual scientific lexicography in the post-World War II era.
