Albania Embraces Modern Architecture with Global Experts

150 international architects from Europe, Asia, and the Americas gathered in Tirana for the “Bread & Heart” Festival. They work in Albania and came together with their partners to share ideas and projects.
This afternoon, the second session of the festival began with new discussions.
Renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito could not attend in person due to health reasons. However, he joined by video and spoke about two projects he is working on in Albania.
“Both projects are exciting. I was encouraged to share my full vision. I believe Albanian architecture stays close to the land, unlike much modernist architecture. I have high hopes for Albania,” said Ito.
After his message, Prime Minister Edi Rama shared a story about their collaboration. He recalled a Zoom meeting where Ito presented a masterplan with two levels. Rama questioned the second level, which seemed unlike Ito’s style. Ito admitted it was designed to meet the client’s request.
Rama suggested removing it and keeping only the first layer. Ito accepted the idea and revised the plan. Rama said this made the project truly reflect Ito’s vision.
“Albania didn’t interfere with his creative process. That’s why he thanked us,” Rama said.
He added that more steps are needed to promote quality architecture in Albania, including better education for investors.
