Albania emerges as a top destination for cultural and historical tourism according to TTW

TIRANA, March 18 – Albania is attracting growing attention for cultural and historical travel. In early 2026, interest in the country’s heritage and identity increased sharply. Visitors now favor historic sites over crowded beaches.
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports reported 42,251 visitors in January and February. Both Albanians and foreigners explored the nation’s cultural landmarks. Travel website “Travel and Tour” (TTW) noted a clear shift from coastal resorts to inland heritage sites. This reflects a broader European trend toward authentic cultural tourism.
Albania’s past offers diverse experiences. Visitors discover Illyrian history, medieval resistance, and Ottoman architecture. National museums showcase key figures and events. Minister Blendi Gonxhja said thousands visited museums during this period. These sites provide more than sightseeing—they give insight into Albanian identity.
The top destinations highlight the trend. The Archaeological Park of Shkodër led with 8,587 visitors, anchored by Rozafa Castle. Kruja’s National Museum “George Kastrioti Skanderbeg” received 8,176 guests. Gjirokastër’s UNESCO-listed “stone city” and its castle drew 5,513 visitors seeking authentic Ottoman architecture.
Officials see cultural tourism as a growth driver. Investments in infrastructure and digital tools aim to improve visitor experiences. The country is positioning itself as a year-round hub for cultural and intellectual exchange.
As tourists explore Albania’s heritage, the country strengthens its image as a place of rich history and living identity.
