Archaeological Discoveries in Zagori: Traces of Ancient Temple and Roadway from 4th–5th Century BC

Ahead of the second phase of road expansion on the Çajup–Zagori segment, archaeologists have identified several objects dating back to the 4th–5th centuries BC in Sheper village, in the Zagori area.
“We are planning a research expedition in the area. Traces of an ancient temple have been found. We aim to study both its style and architectural phases,” said Mariglen Meshini, Director of the Archaeological Service at the National Institute of Cultural Heritage.
Meshini said the findings will help determine the temple’s original function and precise construction date.
Researchers also plan to survey the surrounding territory for unknown settlements. They believe this area holds rich toponyms of archaeological value.
The National Institute of Cultural Heritage will lead the process in cooperation with local authorities and field experts. The team will document and preserve the findings in accordance with cultural heritage standards.
