Archives Highlight Political and Social History Through Photography

On World Photography Day, the General Directorate of Archives shared a collection of images from its Phototheque, reflecting the country’s historical journey.

Ranked second in the republic after the “Marubi” Phototheque (for pre-1944 photography), the online archive fototeka.arkiva.gov.al is fully digitalized. It ensures immediate public access, the purchase of high-resolution reproductions, and the long-term preservation of photographs in their authentic form.

The Phototheque of the GDA holds around 135,000 original photographs. Among them, about 41,000 illustrate Albania’s political life, from Independence to the early stages of state-building.

In addition, the images document social life through economic, cultural, educational, and religious activities.

Furthermore, a fund of nearly 43,000 photographs from the “Luce” Institute offers a retrospective view of Albania under Fascist Italy. Within this fund, about 13,000 negatives belong to the renowned Korçë photographers Vani Burda and Thimi Raci.
