Carmina Burana is a cantata composed in 1935–1936. It is based on 24 medieval poems written in Latin and other old languages.
It premiered at the Frankfurt Opera on June 8, 1937. The work is part of Orff’s musical trilogy Trionfi. The trilogy also includes Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite.
The first and last movements are titled Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi (“Fortune, Empress of the World”). They open and close with the powerful O Fortuna.
