Discovery of the military castle in Elbasan; Municipality kicks off restoration

The Municipality of Elbasan is giving special importance to the city’s cultural heritage, aiming to further promote tourism development.
Following the basilica in the city center, the next discovery is the Castle of Mengli, which represents a military construction built during the reign of Emperor Justinian, where from this height, movements on the “Via Egnatia” road passing at the foot of the hill were completely controlled.
The Director of the Tourism and Culture Agency in the Municipality of Elbasan, Artut Guni, expresses that “very soon this Castle will become accessible to all tourists, as well as those who enjoy hiking, which is only a 25-minute walk from the main road.”
The Castle of Mengli represents a typical example of Byzantine architecture from the 5th century AD, reinforced by 8 towers located at different distances from each other depending on the terrain.
It was located near the “Via Egnatia,” the main artery for westward passage.
