The UNOPS team together with the restoration team are working on the restoration of the mosaic on the main facade of the National History Museum, a major project made possible thanks to the “EU4Culture” program.

During this work, the “EU4Culture” team faced the great challenge of preserving the mosaic surface of 565 m2, a space larger than the size of a basketball court.

To achieve this, conservators had to carefully document the mosaic stone by hand, using a plastic grid and tracing paper.

This involved analyzing and recording 123 different color tones and hundreds of thousands of individual stones (tesserae) at a 1:1 scale. “EU4Culture” used a favorable solution by engaging students from the University of Tirana.

This approach not only gave experts additional support, but also gave students a chance to gain practical experience, working together with experienced professionals and to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
