European countries where more foreign languages are spoken, Albania ranks 4th

February 21 marks the United Nations’ International Mother Language Day, a day that celebrates cultural diversity and polyglotism.

But in which countries do people tend to speak more than one language?

In general, Europeans are quite good with foreign languages. About 65% of the continent’s population can speak at least one language other than their mother tongue, compared to 20% of US adults.

There is considerable variation between regions. The Nordic countries excel at bilingualism, while Southern Europe has it a little harder.

It’s no wonder that countries where English is the mother tongue don’t seem to be interested in learning a foreign language, with 50% of Irish people speaking another language.

The worst result in Europe is that of Great Britain, 34 percent.

In the ranking made by Euronews, Albania ranks fourth, with 40% of adults speaking more than one language, referring to data from Eurostat for 2016.
