European Investment Bank supports restoration of National History Museum in Tirana

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Global signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of Albania to restore and rebuild the National History Museum in Tirana.
Under the agreement, the EIB will provide a €350,000 grant. This funding will cover advisory services for urban restoration and project preparation. The museum was damaged in the 2019 earthquake. The grant will finance project design, technical reviews, supervision, management, and procurement procedures.
According to the ministry, the consultancy services will ensure that the restoration meets high standards. Specifically, the project will improve energy efficiency, climate resilience, and visitor comfort. Moreover, it will integrate the museum with its surrounding urban environment.
The funds come from the EIB Economic Recovery Initiative for the Western Balkans. This initiative aims to support sustainable growth, develop vital infrastructure, and strengthen social cohesion in the region.
Alessandro de Concini, the EIB representative in Albania, said the initiative complements the EU4Culture program. Furthermore, it will promote urban regeneration and revitalize cultural heritage. He added that the project will make the museum more resilient to natural disasters and align it with international standards.
Minister Blendi Gonxhja described the EIB’s technical assistance as crucial for the second phase of restoration. In addition, he emphasized that the project will advance Albania 2030 objectives and support European integration.
Finally, the signing ceremony took place in Tirana. Senior government officials and the EIB Global delegation attended the event.
