“Express”: Thethi, a Small Mountain Village Like Switzerland, But Without Crowds or High Prices

The British newspaper Express highlights Thethi as a hidden gem in Europe. With fewer visitors and lower costs, it can be a great alternative to Switzerland, writes Hannah Reid.

Located in the Shkodër region in northern Albania, Thethi offers stunning views of the Albanian Alps, dense forests, and untouched nature. Moreover, as part of Thethi National Park, the area is surrounded by greenery and fresh mountain air.

With just over 300 residents, Thethi provides an authentic escape from crowds and busy tourist destinations. If you seek peace, adventure, and amazing views, Thethi is a must-visit.

Local people welcome tourists warmly. They have lived here for centuries, keeping their traditional lifestyle close to nature. In addition, visitors can stay in family homes, guesthouses, or restored houses near the national park.

However, the village remains quite isolated. During winter, it becomes largely inaccessible. Therefore, for travelers who want to escape urban noise, Thethi offers calm and natural beauty.

The National Park covers over 26 square kilometers. It includes the Thethi River, rocky mountains, crystal-clear springs, green panoramas, and a valley about 900 meters above sea level.

One of the top attractions is the Grunas Waterfall. It stands about 25 meters tall and lies in the heart of the Albanian Alps. Hikers start from the western foot of Mount Boshi. From there, the waterfall offers incredible views and leads to the Blue Eye of Thethi.

The Blue Eye is a 17-kilometer hike from the village to Nderlyse. Although it is only seven kilometers from the village center, the reward is worth it. Visitors can admire turquoise and emerald waters surrounded by limestone cliffs.

For those seeking a quieter experience, tourists can enjoy lunch in Nderlyse, which overlooks natural pools and surrounding mountains.

Because of its remote location, Thethi has no ATMs. Many cafes and shops accept cash only. Therefore, visitors should bring enough money, as prices in local cafes and stores can be high.
