Finance minister: Over 50 million euros available to address weather-related damage

TIRANA, January 9 – Finance Minister Petrit Malaj said the government has allocated over 50 million euros to address the effects of recent severe weather caused by heavy rainfall. He gave the update during the Interministerial Committee for Civil Emergencies meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Malaj explained that the funds cover emergency management and disaster prevention. The Civil Emergencies program includes 30 million euros, with 15 million euros dedicated to projects and works for disaster prevention.

He added that the Ministry of Defense manages a conditional Civil Emergencies fund of 10 million euros. Local government units will receive the money based on their risk levels.

Malaj noted that the Council of Ministers’ reserve fund of 25 million euros will support specific needs after damage assessments. He also said a 5-million-euro fund is dedicated to dams and reservoirs to finance interventions and investments in water infrastructure.

The committee met in Tirana to update the situation and coordinate measures among government institutions in affected areas.
