Florian Zeller’s “The Mother” Stirs Deep Reflection on Love, Illness, and Loss

Director Mehmet Xhelili staged the drama “The Mother” by French playwright Florian Zeller at ArTurbina.

With choreography by Gjergj Preva and performances by Ema Andreas, Helidon Fino, Enisa Hysa, and Xhuliano Brisku, “The Mother” offered the audience more than just a story—it created an experience.

At the heart of the performance is the mother’s drama—her illness, crisis, and pain—along with the other characters who either cause or are victims of her suffering. The play explores a mother’s deep love for her son, whose departure from home she experiences as a betrayal, compounded by the pathological deviations that accompany it. Additionally, it presents the parallel situation of a marriage, which, for various reasons, is undergoing its own decay.

According to the National Experimental Theater’s website, the powerful messages of the play do not offer answers, but instead pose the existential question screamed by the mother at the end: Why did this have to happen?

Florian Zeller, the author of the work, is a renowned French novelist, playwright, theater director, screenwriter, and film director. Having written more than a dozen plays, many of which have been performed worldwide, he is considered one of the most prominent contemporary playwrights.
