From Wool to Weave: A Village Tradition Continues

Handicrafts add value to the country’s tourism offer.

The Old Bazaar of Gjirokastër offers more than cobblestone streets and medieval architecture. Located in the heart of the old town, it showcases traditional handmade products. Many are still produced using historical methods.

Loom weaving remains one of the surviving traditional crafts. The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Gjirokastër highlights the case of a small workshop run by artisan Manushaqe Toto from Lazarat.

She preserves local traditions through her work. She produces petanik, processes dairy in a dybek, embroiders folk costumes, and weaves on a loom. She approaches her craft with dedication and passion.

Manushaqe is one of the few women in the region who still use the loom. She is the only one in her village. Despite widespread modernization, she continues the tradition. Her grandmother and mother taught her the skill. In the past, they used a simple tool called veq, made from sticks tied to grapevines.

In a video published by the Directorate, Manushaqe demonstrates each step. She begins by shearing sheep. Then she washes, combs, and spins the wool. Finally, she weaves carpets, bags, runners, and blankets using the loom.
