Gender Equality Law approved with 77 votes in favor

The Albanian Parliament approved the Gender Equality draft law today with 77 votes in favor and 36 against. The law is part of Albania’s obligations to the European Union. It updates the 2008 legal framework on gender equality.
The previous law proved ineffective, as highlighted in EU reports. The EU recommended that Albania adopt a new law by 2025. The draft aligns with the requirements for opening key EU accession chapters.
The law guarantees equal rights for women and men in all areas. It reflects fundamental principles of democracy and sustainable societal development, in line with EU core values.
The new law also harmonizes with international gender equality standards. It aims to protect against discrimination and strengthen equality between men and women.
The draft law respects biological concepts and fully complies with the Constitution.
