Gianni Bellesia Revisits Albania 30 Years Later Through Historic Photos

The exhibition “Albania 1994, A People in Motion” brought historic photographs by Gianni Bellesia to Durrës for the first time.

Bellesia captured these images immediately after the fall of the dictatorship. Thirty years ago, the Italian photographer first arrived in Albania as part of a humanitarian mission, delivering two trucks of aid to poor families. Today, he returns as a witness to Albania’s transformation.

The exhibition displays 30 authentic images, telling the story of ordinary people during a difficult but hopeful time, from Durrës to Tirana, Shkodër, and the village of Nënshat.

In 1994, Bellesia traveled with his father, Sebastiano, to deliver aid to a country still shaken by the regime’s fall. Today, he shares those days through the silent power of photography.

More than 200 people attended the event, including local authorities, journalists, artists, students, and citizens. The exhibition offered more than art; it highlighted humanity and cultural memory.

Bellesia received several honors recognizing his deep human and cultural impact: the “Gratitude of the City” from the Autoktone Association, the “Merit Award in Memory of the City” from the Durrës Photo Club, and the rare “Beauty of Durrës” award from the Deputy Mayor, Gentian Kallmi, given to those promoting friendship between peoples.

UNICEF Luxembourg President Zoica Kokoshar, originally from Durrës, attended the event. She welcomed Bellesia and Ambassador Kozeli, calling the project a strong symbol of enduring solidarity.
