Cold War Museum in Gjirokastër remains one of the most visited tourist attractions in 2024 in the “city in stone”.

According to Albanian News Agency, Directorate of Tourism, Heritage, and Sports in Gjirokastër’s municipality says that from January to the end of September, there has been a high influx of both domestic and foreign visitors, who have shown interest in this museum, which operates in a concrete bunker built in the early 1970s.

“From January 1 to September 30, 2024, the museum was visited by 53,638 tourists, with the majority being foreign visitors such as Spaniards, Italians, French, Belgians, Dutch, and others,” stated the Directorate of Tourism and Sports.

Located near the characteristic Bazaar, the most visited area by tourists, the Cold War Museum enriches and makes the travel experience more attractive for those visiting Gjirokastër.

Tourists are drawn to the history of the former bunker built during the Cold War, the museum’s construction style, and the authentic objects inside.

During their visits, tourists often capture photos in the museum, which they keep as memories of their time there.

The tunnel housing the museum stretches about 800 meters. Inside, several spaces were designed to accommodate in the event of an external attack. The bunker consists of 80 rooms, meeting halls, workspaces, rest areas, and even includes a drinking water supply depot, an electricity generator, and more.
