Gonxhja Launches New Cultural Project in the Capital

The Toptani Saraj, one of the capital’s architectural gems, will soon host the Museum of Islamic Art and Heritage. This cultural project will enrich Tirana’s artistic and historical scene.
Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja presented the project on Wednesday evening. He said the Konak Institute will build the museum in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports and the Municipality of Tirana. In the new government, Gonxhja serves as Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports.
Gonxhja called the initiative a new milestone in Tirana’s cultural map. He compared it to recent investments such as the National Theater and the National Gallery. “This will not be a static museum,” he stated. “It will be a living space, with temporary exhibitions, artistic performances, cultural debates, and diverse activities.”
He underlined that Islamic heritage forms an essential part of European history. It shaped Mediterranean culture and fueled the European Renaissance through philosophy, science, art, and architecture.
Gonxhja argued that building the museum goes beyond symbolism. He called it a cultural necessity to revive this shared legacy and strengthen Europe’s identity.
The project will create a dynamic and educational space. It will encourage dialogue between East and West and build a bridge between history, art, and Albania’s modern identity.
