Gospel covers crafted in gold and silver, displayed on one of the stands of the Iconographic Museum”Onufri”

The National Center of Museums in Berat has released on social media one of the most valuable objects preserved by the Iconographic Museum “Onufri”.

We’re talking about gospel covers crafted with mastery in gold and silver, displayed on one of the stands of the Iconographic Museum. The exhibited object belongs to the 18th century. On the left side cover, in the center, the year 1755 is marked.

The two covers depict biblical scenes from the New Testament, mainly from the life of Christ.

At the bottom of the left side, there’s an inscription in Greek which, according to a translation by Theofan Popa, tells us about the author, Petuos Mokrundi from Mokra (between Dibra and Gostivar).

The Berat Museum Center is a specialized institution and archive with the status of “national museum” under the Ministry of Culture, based in the city of Berat, which manages the Iconographic Museum “Onufri” and the Ethnographic Museum.

The Iconographic Museum and the Ethnographic Museum gather, preserve, and promote collections of significant cultural heritage from the city of Berat and the surrounding area. Berat has been an important center of development, especially in the 17th century, a place where valuable cultural treasures were gathered, produced, and preserved, which are true treasures of national culture.
