“Green Vjosa” Project Launches, Strengthening Municipal Capacities Along the River

Albania and Germany have opened a new chapter of cooperation for the sustainable development of the Vjosa National Park. This step comes with the launch of the “Green Vjosa” project. The initiative aims to protect nature, involve local communities, and promote economic growth through sustainable tourism.

According to Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj, the project results from long-term efforts and negotiations that began earlier in Berlin. Ultimately, Albania and Germany finalized the initiative through close bilateral cooperation.

Moreover, Jaupaj emphasized that “Green Vjosa” will strengthen the capacities of municipalities along the Vjosa River. The project will support community initiatives and create an integrated model of nature management. Importantly, this model can serve as an example for other regions and support Albania’s European integration, particularly Chapter 27.

Meanwhile, Minister Jaupaj and German Ambassador to Tirana Karl Bergner signed the “Green Vjosa” agreement in Tirana one day earlier. The agreement promotes sustainable, inclusive, and nature-based regional development in the Vjosa National Park basin.

In addition, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development supports the project. GIZ Albania implements it on the ground. The project will strengthen park administration through training and experience exchange. At the same time, it will encourage local businesses and nature-based products and services. Furthermore, it will enhance regional cooperation among public institutions, the private sector, and civil society.

Finally, the project will run from 2026 to 2029. It aims to create income and jobs for local communities while ensuring sustainable and inclusive nature management.
