Icon “Life-Giving Spring” by the Zografi Brothers Restored

The restoration and conservation of the icon “Life-Giving Spring,” originally from St. Peter’s Monastery in Vithkuq, Korça, has been completed.

According to Fjoralba Prifti, director of the National Museum of Medieval Art, who spoke to the Albanian news agency, ATSH, the restoration took nearly two years. The Center for Restoration and Study of Icons at the museum’s Restoration Laboratory carried out the work.

The 18th-century icon is the creation of Kostandin and Athanas Zografi, brothers from Korça.

The icon had serious damage, including paint loss, flaking of the base layer, and insect damage to the wooden panel. The varnish was heavily oxidized and formed patches. These issues made the restoration process long and complex.

After disinfection, consolidation, and cleaning of the varnish, the team completed retouching and re-varnishing.
