Interfaith Council: Draft Law on Gender Equality Conflicts with Albanian Family Tradition

TIRANA – The Interfaith Council of Albania has expressed concern that parts of the draft law “On Gender Equality” clash with theological principles and traditional Albanian family values.
The Council, which includes the Muslim Community of Albania, the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, the Catholic Church in Albania, the World Bektashi Headquarters, and the Evangelical Brotherhood of Albania, said that definitions such as “gender,” “gender identity,” and “gender expression” are unclear and open to misinterpretation.
It stressed the importance of the traditional family structure based on two biological sexes: male and female. The Council requested that the draft law explicitly link the term “gender” to sex assigned at birth, including male, female, boy, and girl, in line with equality and non-discrimination principles.
While supporting Albania’s efforts to align legislation with EU directives, the Council noted that recognizing only two sexes does not prevent this process, as many EU member states continue to use a binary definition.
The Interfaith Council reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and cooperation with authorities to build a fair and safe society for future generations, grounded in faith and respect for the law.
