“Leaving Balkan countries outside the EU would be a historic mistake”. That is the statement coming from the italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, in a media interview, commenting on the idea put forward by Slovenian President Borut Pahor, for an enlargement of the Union to include all Balkan countries at the same time.

“In Brussels we all share the idea that the EU can not view the Western Balkans simply as one of its neighborhood regions,” he said.

“Leaving these countries outside the EU would be a historic mistake, an unjustified political short-sightedness that would favor third parties not necessarily interested in the region’s full integration into the Union,” Di Maio said.
