Learning embroidery, an initiative to pass on the tradition to the new generation

They are a group of 9-year-old girls from the “Xhuzepe Gras” school, who have showed their desire to learn to embroider. They have become part of the initiative undertaken by the Gjirokastër Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage to continue one of the traditions for which this city is famous.

They start this journey with the hope that tomorrow with their hands they will be able to create beautiful works like their mothers and grandmothers.

It is the master of embroidery of popular costumes, Eli Zhulati, who will lead the girls in this new and interesting experience. It is a pleasure for her to work with young women, or as she puts it differently, with the generation that has not yet inherited the tradition.

“The girls will do small works that will please them and be appreciated both by us and by their families. Why not these be the first handcraft souvenirs from this age group, maybe in one of the shops of Gjirokastër,” says Zhulati.

In the first hour we found them in the museum house of the writer, Ismail Kadare, and the program will be carried out in different characteristic houses of Gjirokastër. According to the local Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage, this initiative is intended to be extended to all schools.
