Leka Bungo Debuts New Comedy “Dream in the Attic”: A Satirical Look at Socialist Family Ideals

Renowned director Leka Bungo has unveiled his latest work, “Ëndërr në Papafingo” (“Dream in the Attic”), a lighthearted comedy set in the 1970s. The play takes place in a villa in central Tirana, home to the family of a war hero from both the Vlora War and the National Liberation Movement.

The comedy explores a significant social theme of the era: the construction of the “new” socialist family.

“It’s a cheerful comedy reflecting on the philosophy behind the socialist ‘new family’ concept,” Bungo explained. “The play revolves around a marriage and alliance formed for personal gain, highlighting a primitive corruption that endures today but in a modern guise.”

Assistant director Astrit Hasani offered a closer look at the production, reflecting on his collaborative work and friendship with the esteemed director Leka Bungo: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Leka Bungo on several occasions, and his name is always linked to the positive spirit and success of a performance. This play brings a unique yet straightforward theme, where the past resonates with the future—what once was will come again.”

The production is a joint effort by the professional theater companies Bylis and Skampa, set to debut in time for the November celebrations.
