The General Directorate of Archives recalls that on February 14, 1990, Saint Teresa received Albanian citizenship.
Mother Teresa, her name was Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, and she was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje. She was the third child born to Nikollë Bojaxhiu and Dranafile Bernaj.
Her girlhood passions were teaching, writing, and composing music, reflecting the strong feelings that led her to her higher vocation, religion.
On September 26, 1928, Mother Teresa left Skopje to start her noble mission in the service of the impossible, without knowing that from that day on, she would say goodbye to her mother and sister. She settled in Calcutta, India, where she initially worked as a teacher, fulfilling her lifelong dream. Later, she was appointed headmistress of a girls’ school.
In the framework of her ministry dedicated to the needy, Mother Teresa founded the “Missionaries of Charity” order in 1950. For her unparalleled humility and dedication to serving the poor, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, bringing widespread recognition to her Albanian nationality.
