National History Museum renovation site

TIRANA, December 24 – Prime Minister Edi Rama shared images on Wednesday from the renovation site of the National History Museum. He described the project as one of the country’s most important cultural tourism initiatives.
In a social media post, Rama said the images marked the rebirth of the National Historical Museum. He added that the museum represented an important treasure of cultural tourism and wished the public a good day.
The National History Museum closed to the public on 15 March 2024. Earlier, authorities announced that the museum would remain closed for 4 years. They planned the reopening for 15 March 2028.
The project included restoration, reconstruction, and full musealization of the building. Authorities had designated the museum as a Category II Cultural Monument.
Meanwhile, the interventions formed part of the EU4Culture programme. The programme supported 24 cultural heritage sites in Albania. It provided funding of 40 million euros from the European Union and the state budget.
As a result, officials expected the investment to bring a fundamental change in how the public connected with history and elements of national identity.
In addition, data showed that 99,796 people visited the National History Museum in 2023. This marked an 80 percent increase compared to 2022, when the museum recorded 55,306 visitors.
With this project, Rama described the site as the rebirth of the museum. He placed it at the centre of the vision for developing cultural tourism in Albania.
