National History Museum Under Restoration to Become a Modern Institution

The Ministry for Economy, Culture and Innovation reports that work is underway to restore the National History Museum as a dignified and modern institution. The goal is to properly preserve and present Albania’s national history.
The museum faced many challenges and damages over the years, including from the 2019 earthquake. Currently, it undergoes restoration, reconstruction, and modernization. This project represents the most significant upgrade of this symbolic institution. It is part of the EU4Culture program, managed by UNOPS, with support from the European Union and the ministry.
In the first phase, work focuses on packing and moving artifacts, strengthening the structure, renovating facades, insulating the roof, and installing a monitoring system. It also includes facade restoration using advanced materials like carbon fiber.
The ministry is preparing the budget for the second phase. This will add underground laboratories and technical spaces, an internal glass façade called “Oculus,” and restore the iconic roof. The upgrade will also feature modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, fire protection, updated museology, and complete furnishing.
