New Butrint Visitor Center Blends Nature, Heritage, and Modern Design

The new Visitor Center in the ancient city of Butrint beautifully blends functionality with heritage. It welcomes visitors while seamlessly integrating with the natural landscape and the area’s rich archaeology.
Prime Minister Edi Rama shared today new images of the project on social media. Moreover, he described it as a model cultural landmark that strengthens Albania’s growing network of heritage sites.
Designed by world-renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the project is being implemented under the guidance of the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF). In addition, it aims to transform how Butrint National Park is managed and experienced.
Rama praised the AADF for turning Butrint from a management challenge into a national success story. Furthermore, he noted that the foundation continues to advance a global strategy to promote this cultural gem to international audiences.
“A brilliant project that sets a new standard for managing and promoting our cultural treasures,” Rama stated. He also emphasized that the Japanese design philosophy demands precision and excellence. According to him, this project could become one of the best visitor centers in the world.
Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports Blendi Gonxhja highlighted another key aspect. He said the new center will serve as the main gateway to Butrint, guiding visitors toward a richer and more meaningful exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Additionally, Gonxhja explained that the design reflects a deep respect for history. It merges nature, culture, and modernity without overshadowing the surrounding landscape. Natural light, wooden structures, and calm open spaces enhance the visitor experience. At the same time, shallow foundations protect the fragile archaeological layers beneath, in line with the highest international standards.
“This project speaks to history using the language of today and tomorrow,” Gonxhja wrote.
Located in a strategic area, the center connects mountain trails, lagoon paths, Butrint Lake, and the Vivari Channel. Therefore, visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences — from nature walks to panoramic viewpoints and archaeological tours.
In addition, the new entrance will improve visitor management and provide modern facilities, including a redesigned ticket area, docking space, and visitor support services.
Kengo Kuma’s world-famous architecture studio won the International Design Competition for the Butrint Visitor Center. Notably, the winning concept focuses not only on architecture but also on creating an open, welcoming gateway that brings together visitors and the local community.
Ultimately, this elegant center — equipped with all necessary infrastructure — will honor the universal values of the entire Butrint National Park. Through its thoughtful design, it will protect the past, enhance the present, and inspire the future.
