Opposition holds national protest; Molotov cocktails thrown at Prime Minister’s office, police, and parliament

The opposition, led by Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, held a national protest on Tuesday, February 10, on “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard in Tirana. Protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the formation of a technical government to ensure free elections.

The rally began peacefully, with party officials addressing the crowd in front of the Prime Minister’s Office. However, tension rose after Berisha’s closing speech. Several protesters threw Molotov cocktails, fireworks, and hard objects toward police officers stationed near the building.

Flames erupted near the main entrance as dozens of Molotovs hit the area. One police officer was injured during the clashes. Protesters then moved toward the Parliament, continuing to throw firebombs and pyrotechnics.

In response, police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. The pressure of the water jets helped extinguish the flames and push protesters away from the government buildings.

This was the third national protest organized by the opposition in recent months. Each rally has ended with similar scenes of unrest following Berisha’s speeches.

Despite the violence, the opposition insists it will continue demonstrations until the government resigns and new elections are announced.
