Over 700 Rare Works on Display at National Library, Tracing Mediterranean Memory

The exhibition “Memory of the Mediterranean, From Antiquity to Modern Times” opened this week at the National Library in Tirana. It is part of Tirana’s role as the 2025 Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue.

More than 700 rare works are on display. They include books, manuscripts, maps, and engravings from the 14th to the 19th century. All pieces come from the National Library’s collection.

The opening brought together Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja, Library Director Pirro Misha, acting Mayor of Tirana Anuela Ristani, Deputy Director Majlinda Toçi, as well as diplomats, historians, and scholars.

Visitors had the chance to explore the items up close. Each object tells part of the region’s cultural and historical story.

Minister Gonxhja called the exhibition “an impressive journey through the National Library’s rich archive.” He said it shows the value of preserving and promoting documentary heritage.

“This is more than a display. It invites us to reflect on Albania’s place in Mediterranean history,” he said. “It helps us reconnect with the East, the West, and with ourselves”.

The exhibition focuses on the diversity of the Mediterranean world, its cultures, religions, societies, and politics. It presents classical authors, Byzantine traditions, Venetian prints, and works that highlight ties between the Mediterranean and the East.

Organizers see the exhibition as a concrete contribution to public awareness. It also promotes interest in Albania’s historical role in the broader region.

The exhibition remains open every day until July 18, from 09:00 to 20:00.
