Peleshi in Italy: Intensive parliamentary diplomacy for Albania’s EU membership

Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi continued his official visit to Italy. This visit is part of Albania’s parliamentary diplomacy to advance EU membership.
First, he met with Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. Peleshi said that Italy remains Albania’s strategic partner. Moreover, he called it one of Albania’s strongest allies on the path to the European Union.
He stressed that Albania moves fast toward EU membership. Meanwhile, the Albanian Parliament plays a leading role in the process. He also highlighted that Albania contributes to stability, security, and peace in the region. In addition, he praised Italy’s ongoing support for Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic integration.
He reaffirmed that the EU is the only strategic destination for the Western Balkans.
On the other hand, Fontana described Italy as a close friend and strategic partner of Albania. He said bilateral relations are excellent. He also confirmed strong Italian support for Albania’s quick EU accession. Fontana noted that this support is both political and technical. Furthermore, he said the Chamber of Deputies will continue promoting this support.
Fontana emphasized the importance of parliamentary cooperation. Specifically, he highlighted culture, education, universities, tourism, and defense. All of these, he said, are essential for Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean. He also praised the Albanian community in Italy. Finally, he reaffirmed Italy’s support for Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic integration as a contribution to regional stability and security.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed the implementation of the Pensions Agreement. So far, 3,500 applications have been submitted. They also noted the strategic importance of Corridor VIII for connectivity, economic growth, energy, and security.
Both sides agreed to continue intensive parliamentary cooperation at all levels. This includes committees and friendship groups.
Speaker Peleshi is accompanied by MPs Ogerta Manastirliu, Ermal Elezi, Skënder Pashaj, and Eriona Ismaili. They are members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Italy. Albania’s Ambassador to Italy, Anila Bitri, also joined the delegation.
