President Begaj: League of Lezha Remains a Standard for Political and Institutional Conduct

TIRANA, March 2 – President Bajram Begaj commemorated the 582nd anniversary of the League of Lezha. He noted that it is one of the most important events in Albanian history during the medieval period and the wider national context.

He highlighted that the League of Lezha represented unity over division, collective responsibility over personal ambition, and common interest over individual interest. He emphasized that even 582 years later, the League remains a standard for political and institutional conduct. He added that the strength of the Albanian nation has relied not only on courage, but also on coordination, vision, and responsible leadership.

Begaj also explained that under the vision of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albanians acted as a single entity. He said they became part of European history, demonstrating resilience, dignity, and the pursuit of freedom.

The League of Lezha convened at the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas in the city of Lezha. Today, the memorial of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg is located at the same site.

The assembly brought together Albanian nobles in a political and military alliance against Ottoman forces. Before the meeting, George Kastrioti consulted with Albanian leaders. He stressed that unity was essential to face the common enemy.

Representatives from Albanian principalities attended, from north to south. The main families included the Arianiti, Dukagjini, Balsha, and Topia clans. The Prince of Montenegro also participated.

The primary goal of the assembly was to unite all forces in the fight against the Ottomans.
