Rama: Diplomatic Service Law opens doors for diaspora inclusion

Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader Edi Rama today stressed the importance of the Diplomatic Service Law. First, he called it a key step to reform the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. At the same time, he said it will improve Albania’s diplomatic service.

For years, Rama said, the Foreign Ministry has lacked deep reforms. Instead, previous laws only changed appearances. As a result, they failed to deliver real impact.

According to Rama, Albania does not yet have a diplomatic service that meets modern global and national challenges. Therefore, he said, the new law must open the path to reform. Above all, it must bring fresh energy and new professionals.

Moreover, Rama highlighted the role of the Albanian diaspora. He said Albanians abroad must take part more actively in diplomacy. However, he noted that Albanian missions still lack proper structures to support this involvement.

Meanwhile, Rama announced that the Diaspora Summit will take place in the spring. In addition, the government will maintain continuous contact with Albanian communities abroad.

Regarding parliamentary oversight, Rama said Parliament has not fully fulfilled its monitoring role. In fact, the European Union has repeatedly raised this concern.

For this reason, Rama underlined the need for stronger coordination. Specifically, he called for respect for the role of parliamentary committees. Ultimately, he said, this step will improve institutional performance.

In conclusion, Rama stated that the Diplomatic Service Law, together with better parliamentary coordination, will strengthen Albania’s diplomacy. Overall, he said, the goal is a more effective, modern, and inclusive diplomatic service able to face today’s global challenges.
