Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” on Stage at National Theatre

The National Theatre is staging the romantic comedy “As You Like It” by William Shakespeare this season. John Blondell directs the production, which brings together a wide ensemble of actors.
Shakespeare wrote the original play around 1599. It was first performed in 1603 at Wilton House. Since then, it has seen many adaptations, including for radio, film, and musicals.
The story follows Rosalind. She flees her uncle’s court with her cousin Celia. Together, they take refuge in the Forest of Arden. There, they encounter a variety of characters.
One of them is Jaques. He is a wandering, melancholic figure. His famous monologue “All the world’s a stage” brings a reflective tone. That moment adds contrast to the lighter rhythm of the play.
This new production keeps the core of Shakespeare’s work. It explores love, freedom, and the search for identity with fresh energy.
