Similarities between Albanian and Azerbaijan folk music instruments

The Ambassador of Azerbaijan in our country, Anar Huseynov, shared with the media information about the folk musical instruments that bear similarities to those of Albania, which the ambassador considers as common elements between the cultures of both countries.

The presence of images of various musical instruments in objects discovered during archaeological excavations in the region inhabited by Azerbaijan suggests that these instruments have an ancient history.

Around 90 musical instruments are known to have been used in Azerbaijan. According to modern sound classification, they are divided into four groups: string, wind, percussion, and idiophonic instruments.

Traditional folk musical instruments of Azerbaijan bear a striking resemblance in appearance and share many similarities with the folk musical instruments of Albania, which are also widely known in the country.

The most widespread string musical instruments currently are: Tar, which Uzeyir Hajibeyov, a prominent composer and founder of opera art in Azerbaijan, considered “the first in terms of frequency of use” and “the most valuable and important instrument for expanding oriental music education,” kamancheh, called “the most beautiful of melodic instruments,” saz – the “conversationalist” of poets and Ashugs, and oud, considered the “king” of all instruments.

“The borders between countries are not barriers to the musical communication of peoples. Music is the only universal language known to every human being. If politics sometimes divides nations, music and culture, in general, always unite people,” Ambassador Anar Huseynov said.
