Spiropali: Full Discussions Ahead in Athens

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Elisa Spiropali, will visit Athens next Tuesday. She gave an interview to the Greek newspaper TA NEA this weekend.

She will meet Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis. Spiropali said she will discuss everything, 360 degrees.

She explained, “We will cover our long list of cooperation areas. We will talk about strengths and areas to improve. Greece is a strategic partner. It is an important neighbor. We aim to move forward with close cooperation, friendship, and European values. Our relations are strong. Yet, we can expand them in energy, especially renewable energy and regional security. We will also discuss environmental protection, digital transformation, tourism, and security.”

Spiropali added that her priority is to open a new chapter—the best chapter so far—in Albania–Greece relations.

She addressed the unresolved maritime boundaries issue. She said Albania is committed to solving all pending issues with Greece. This includes maritime and some land border agreements. Albania follows international law and respects good-neighbor principles.

Both sides must keep communication channels open. This will ensure progress remains constructive and mutually respectful. It will also align with the shared European goals of both countries.

Spiropali spoke about Greece’s support for Albania’s EU integration in 2027, when Greece will hold the EU Presidency. She said Albania expects Greece to use its influence to advance a shared European space in the region. The Western Balkans should be treated as a strategic whole, not isolated peripheries.

She added that Greek leadership will keep the Western Balkans a priority. This includes EU expansion, connectivity, energy, and security. It is not secondary to other priorities. It is a key investment in Europe’s stability and future.

Spiropali said integration benefits all parties. She explained, “It will also benefit Greece. Greece gains by having a broader European space at its border. This space encourages cooperation, engagement, and shared growth. Currently, Bulgaria is Greece’s only EU neighbor. A second corridor through Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia into Europe will benefit all countries, including Greece.”

She also focused on helping the Albanian diaspora in Greece. This includes simpler administrative procedures and better educational and cultural opportunities for children.

Albanian language classes will be available as electives in Greek schools. Both governments are finalizing a bilateral social security agreement. Spiropali said it will ensure fair recognition of pensions and contributions. This protects work years and the future of Albanian citizens in Greece.
