The 8th of December, the National Youth Day

TIRANA, December 8 – The 8th of December marks the National Youth Day, a date that recalls the student movement of December 1990. That event changed the course of the country’s history.

Thirty-five years ago, students and lecturers of the University of Tirana became the initiators of the major democratic turning point. They took the first step toward establishing political pluralism in Albania.

On 8 December 1990, hundreds of young people gathered in the Tirana State University Campus and protested under the motto “We want Albania like all of Europe.”

At the same time, they demanded the fall of the dictatorial system, the creation of a democratic state, the guarantee of the rule of law, and the country’s integration into the European family.

People knew this movement as the “December Student Movement,” and it led to the collapse of the communist regime. The movement opened the path for the country’s democratic transformation.

Today, the 8th of December stands as a day of reflection on the sacrifices of the youth of those years.

Finally, it appears as a symbol of aspirations for freedom, democracy, and European integration.
