The Academy of Albanian Studies(AAS) has fulfilled its mission by bringing 5 volumes of a long historical period of Albania. The important project already carried out by AAS with the dedication of Hasan Bello and a body of editors coincides with the years 1991-1999.

“History of Albanians during the 20th century (1945-1999)”, published today, completes the series with five volumes, in the most important study project of the Institute of History at AAS. This volume deals with a long historical period: the time period of the communist system (1945-1990) and the first decade of transition in Albania (1991-1999). A large part of the themes, theses and events are treated for the first time, bringing innovation to historical studies and laying stable reference bases for the future.
Part of the professional treatment is not only political history, but also developments in the spheres of economy, education, literature, health, institutions and religious belief. An important place has been given to the history of Albanians outside the political borders of the Albanian state, those in Yugoslavia, Chameria and the diaspora. For most of these topics, new elements have been introduced, both in terms of information and scientific arguments, as well as in historiographical analyzes and theses.

A novelty is the treatment of the late 80s and the first decade of transition, political and social changes, positive processes and negative phenomena, the opening of Albania and emigration, electoral and representative processes, as well as the state organization sanctioned in the Constitution. One of the specific difficulties of writing this volume was the lack of in-depth and professional studies on some problems of this relatively new historical period. To overcome it, maximum efforts were made through in-depth research in archives and the use of quality publications by foreign and Albanian authors.
