The book fair “Leipzig 2024” – Albanian literature part of international discussions

After implementing initiatives to promote reading and support emerging writers through the establishment of publishing and promotional platforms, Albania made its debut appearance at the Leipzig Book Fair this year. This participation not only marked Albania’s integration into a European celebration of literature but also aimed to foster cultural exchanges. The theme of the Leipzig Book Fair for 2024 was “Who still reads?” while Albania’s stand motto, “Don’t look back,” contemplated on history, the past, and the future through a philosophical concept facilitated by the act of reading. The National Center of Books and Reading organized a diverse program of activities and discussions focusing on Albanian literature, with particular emphasis on supporting young authors.
“It was a highly rewarding period for Albanian literature and the invited authors who participated in this fair. Albania hosted several engaging panels centered around the fair’s overarching theme, which poses a universal question that resonates with us all: ‘who still reads.’ The Albanian authors featured in our panels were predominantly young talents. Additionally, we were honored to have Rita Petro, Stefan Capaliku, and Mimoza Hysa in attendance,” remarked Alda Bardhyli, the director of the National Center of Books.
Since 1994, the Leipzig Book Fair has been bestowing awards to its participants. Among these accolades, the Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding stands out as one of Germany’s most prestigious literary honors. Albania made its inaugural appearance at the Leipzig Book Fair in 2015.
