Some former political prisoners returned to the former Spaçi prison to share their stories with the younger generations.

The meeting was organized on the occasion of the “Past and Present” exhibition supported by the EU4CULTURE program.

Through the sculptures and recordings of 49 former political prisoners, this exhibition recalls the suffering, but also the resilience of the Albanian people and in this way encourages a genuine discussion about Albania’s past.

The EU ambassador in our country, Silvio Gonzato, called the meeting with the survivors of the Spaci prison deeply touching.

“The meeting with the survivors of the Spaçi prison, one of the most brutal prisons of the communist regime in Albania, was really touching. Hearing their stories reminded me that much remains to be done in dealing with the past. I am glad that so many young people came to Spac to meet the survivors.

They must understand where they come from and what Albania has been through. One must heal the wounds of the past by addressing the rights of victims. I am proud that we supported this event, but this is not enough. The former prison of Spaci is rapidly deteriorating, while it must be preserved so that we remember what happened here and say: Never Again”, said the ambassador of Gonzato.
