The film “Alexander”, Albania’s candidacy for the Oscars

The film ‘Alexander,’ directed by Ardi Sadik, has been selected as Albania’s official submission for the 96th edition of the Oscars. The National Center of Cinematography (NCC) announced that a commission of 5 members has chosen the documentary ‘Alexander,’ directed by Ardi Sadik, to represent Albania in the ‘International Feature Film’ category this year.
The selection was made by the Commission established by Order no. 332, dated 23.08.2023, by the Supervisor of the National Center of Cinematography, Zerina Bruci. The commission is composed of Arben Lami (chairman) and four members: Gerta Qurku, Eno Milkani, Genc Përmeti, and Florenc Papas.
The National Cinematography Center stated, “This documentary focuses on an event as rare and representative of many others that bear witness to the extraordinary sacrifices of Albanians for freedom.”
The documentary narrates the story of Aleksandër Gruda, a naval mechanic who hijacked a warship in 1990 to escape from Albania. However, freedom for him and his family came at the cost of a great sacrifice.
The Academy Awards will be presented by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences at the annual ceremony on March 10, 2024.
