The icon ‘Five Apostles’ is on display for the first time during European Heritage Week

The National Museum Center of Berat inaugurated European Heritage Week by exhibiting the icon ‘Five Apostles’ for the first time to the public, attributed to Onufri of Çipra, from the 16th century.
For decades, this icon has been housed in the collection of the Onufri Iconographic Museum. Following a restorative intervention this year by specialist restorer Erion Lezi, it will become a permanent part of the displayed iconographic collection in the museum.
“Inspired by this year’s theme ‘Journeys, Networks, and Connections’ for the European Heritage Days, we chose an iconographer like Onufri of Çipra, who, continuing the brilliant tradition of Onufri, brings influences from the art of Cyprus and Crete. This connection makes the iconographic art of Berat a significant part of a network that influenced many Mediterranean and Balkan spaces, showcasing a high artistic level through various local schools of the time,” states the National Museum Center of Berat’s online platform.
The last week of September coincides with the European Heritage Days, culminating in the National Day of Cultural Heritage on September 29. Throughout Europe, activities will take place to protect and promote cultural heritage.
