The Icon of the Evangelization, one of the pearls of the “Onufri” Iconographic Museum

The Berat National Center of Museums brings to the public’s attention one of the oldest icons of the iconographic collection of the “Onufri” Museum.
It is about the icon of the Evangelization, a work of XIV-XV century, with an anonymous author and originating from the Church of the Evangelization in the Berat Castle.
The scene in the foreground shows the archangel Gabriel standing giving the good news to Mary who is sitting on a throne. The small-sized icon is composed with a high artistic level within an architectural background dominated by symmetry and the multi-faceted play towards perspective, typical in the art of the Italian Renaissance.
The icon holds the number 17 in the audio guide section this museum offers. The “Onufri” museum is unique with its location in the heart of the ensemble of historical dwellings, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, within the walls of the thousand-year-old Berat Castle.
