The old Sopot Aqueduct Bridge, built by Ali Pasha of Tepelena

The Gjirokastër Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage published on social networks footage from the old “Sopot Aqueduct Bridge” over the Bufano stream or as it is otherwise known “Ali Pasha’s Bridge”, which is a Cultural Monument of 1-st category.
The aqueduct bridge is built with a circular arch with a vault 45 cm thick and 3.6 m span. The height from the ground is 2.3 m.
The foundations of the bridge are made of stone and lime mortar and the arch is made of stone too.
This stone aqueduct of Gjirokastër Castle is one of the most unique constructions for its time.
It was 12 km long and through a special architecture with bridges and arches, it brought water from the Mount Sopot to supply the Gjirokastër Castle.
What remains today continues to attract various visitors.
