Third Arbëresh Studies Convention Opens at Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

Tirana, October 30 – The Third Arbëresh Studies Convention opened today at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEPJ). The event is organized by the Center for Arbëresh Studies and Publications (QSPA).
This edition focuses on the theme: “Narratives of the Past and Present in the Diaspora–Homeland Dialectic: Arbëresh and Albania”. The Convention takes place every two years. It represents the most important academic event organized by QSPA on the Center’s fifth anniversary.
In addition, the Convention featured performances in Arbëresh by the group “Arbëria-Frasnita” from Frasnita in Calabria.
Meanwhile, QSPA Director, Prof. Diana Kastrati, delivered the opening address. She presented the Center’s activities over the past five years. Kastrati emphasized the need for clarity and objectivity in addressing Arbëresh issues. She stressed moving beyond folkloristic and sporadic activities. She highlighted the importance of a proper vision for this diaspora.
During the Convention, Kastrati noted that if the faculty has an emblematic figure, it is Prof. Emil Lafe. She said, “He is one of the figures who has guided and supported the education of many generations. He is also among the most significant contributors to QSPA’s work. We are fortunate to have him as part of the Scientific Publications Council”.
Later, Prof. Lafe praised the organizers and wished them successful and productive work. He said, “This young academic institution has proven its value. Today, the Center comes to this Convention with rich academic and publishing activities and a clear vision for the future”.
He added, “Thanks to QSPA’s work, Arbëresh culture, history, literature, and language are gaining more recognition among researchers and the wider Albanian public”.
Furthermore, Prof. Lafe stressed that the Arbëresh world, as a valuable and beloved part of our national identity, must survive through development, not as a museum object. He said this goal guides the Convention.
Finally, Damiano Guagliardi, President of the Federation of Arbëresh Associations (Italy), spoke during the event. He said, “This Convention is not only a success for a few scholars. It belongs to the entire Arbëresh community in Italy”.
