Tourism minister Gonxhja tells Forbes: Albania shifts focus from visitor numbers to quality

TIRANA, February 18 – Albania’s Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister, Blendi Gonxhja, told Forbes Travel that the government is using Spain’s tourism model as a guide for planning, professionalization, and quality-focused development.
Gonxhja said Albania has transformed over the past decade, becoming one of Europe’s fastest-growing destinations, with over 12 million international visitors in 2025. He stressed that the priority is no longer visitor numbers but improving service quality, extending stays, and spreading tourism more evenly across the country and year-round.
International investors are developing luxury projects that raise standards and position Albania as a reliable and competitive regional destination. Gonxhja said this quality-based model aims to preserve natural and cultural heritage, support sustainable employment, and increase long-term economic value.
He also highlighted the importance of diverse tourism offerings. Combining the coast, historic cities, mountain regions, and authentic gastronomy creates immersive experiences and encourages visitors to stay longer and explore deeper.
