Typological Features of Albanian Syntax Discussed at the Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Linguistics and Literature organized a scholarly event at the Academy of Sciences of Albania. The lecture, titled “Typological Features of Albanian Syntax: The Case of Preposed Articles”, was delivered by Associate Professor Aristotel Spiro.

Many scholars attended, including Associate Academician Gëzim Hoxha, head of the Section of Social and Albanological Sciences; Professor Anila Omari, chair of the Permanent Commission of Linguistics and Literature; Academician Kristina Jorgaqi; and researchers from the Institute and university language departments across Albania.

According to the Academy, Professor Spiro emphasized that Albanian, as part of the Indo-European family, holds a unique position among regional and broader languages. This is due to its development of a dual nominal article system, which sets it apart from other synthetic-analytic languages.

He presented a diachronic analysis of how old demonstrative pronouns evolved into both preposed and postposed articles.

He concluded that Albanian tends to morphologize syntactic structures when linguistic intuition perceives them as morphological facts. However, deeper analysis reveals a distinct linguistic reality. Clitic elements act as separate grammatical units—morphologically distinct—yet essential to fill the functional gaps of nouns, especially adjectives.

This feature gives Albanian a special typological place among synthetic-analytic languages.
