Unifying the Albanian Language: Key Moments from the 1972 Language Congress

From November 20 to 25, 1972, the Congress on the Standardization of the Albanian Language was held, marking a significant milestone in the development of a unified literary language. This event gathered 87 delegates from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Montenegro, including prominent figures from the scientific, educational, and cultural spheres, as well as Albanians from Italy (Arbëreshë). Among the most distinguished participants were Aleks Buda, Androkli Kostallari, Bedri Dedja, Dhimitër Shuteriqi, Eqrem Çabej, Idriz Ajeti, and Josif Ferrari.

The primary objective of the Congress was to establish the fundamental principles and guidelines for creating standardized orthographic rules, ultimately leading to the unification of the Albanian literary language. This effort represented the culmination of decades of work by the Albanian Renaissance figures and the Albanian Literary Committee.

The unified orthography of the Albanian language represents the crystallization of the national literary norm across all essential linguistic elements, including phonetics, grammar, morphology, and lexicon. A crucial role in this process was played by the delegation from Prishtina. The Congress followed a key meeting in Prishtina, where many important language standards were already set, further cementing the path to a unified standard.
