University of Tirana Celebrates 68 Years of Academic and Social Impact

Tirana State University marks its 68th anniversary today, celebrating a key milestone in the history of higher education in Albania.

On May 30, 1957, the Council of Ministers approved the creation of the State University of Tirana. The government appointed Zija Këlliçi as rector, Kolë Paparisto as deputy rector for scientific affairs, and Hasan Duma as deputy rector for academic affairs. The decision took effect on June 1.

Since its founding, the University of Tirana has grown into the country’s largest public academic institution. It has played a central role in shaping generations of students and professionals, while contributing to Albania’s social, economic, and cultural development.

In its early years, the university opened with faculties in history, law, economics, engineering, natural sciences, and medicine. These laid the foundation for decades of academic growth and research.

On this anniversary, the University thanked all who have contributed to its journey, professors, researchers, students, and long-time collaborators. It remains committed to quality education, scientific progress, and building strong partnerships at home and abroad.
